A Tribute to Rev. John G. Pastor
It is in this beloved community that we truly share our joys and sorrows, deepest concerns, uninhibited laughter, fondest dreams, and prayers for peace and justice. Building this community is my call as a Unitarian Universalist minister. I am honored and humbled in this task.
We Bid a Fond Farewell as Rev. John Retires
Rev. John G. Pastor, Jr. served as our minister from 2007-2017. He officially retired from active UU ministry at the end of the church year, in June 2017. We celebrated John's tenure with us at a heartfelt gathering where congregation members and friends spoke eloquently of John's time with us and the effects of his ministry on our lives, our families and communities.
Rev. John helped us to create a beloved church community where all are welcome. A gifted speaker, Rev. John brought both his deep spiritual practices and scholarly understandings of Unitarian Universalism and religious traditions from around the world to the UUSG pulpit. Rev. John has a gift for gathering people into community, which we saw most dramatically in his successful efforts to join with ministers of all the area churches to create an Interfaith Service at Thanksgiving time — a lovely tradition that continues here in Gardner.
Rev. John also established a Blessing of the Animals in the greater Gardner area. Pet owners of all faiths came each October bringing their beloved animal friends for the ritual that stems from St. Francis of Assisi's love and care for animals.
While we are saddened to say good-bye to Rev. John, we are grateful for the ways in which his ministry strengthened us and prepared us for becoming a UU Fellowship. We look forward to visiting with Rev. John in the future!
