Grateful to be Granted
We recently received a letter from the First Parish Church (Unitarian Universalist) of Billerica . The letter informed us that we would be receiving a $1,000 grant to be used for the growth of our church. This news was very exciting and just a little unbelievable. Why were they willing to give us this grant? After talking to the president of the Billerica church, I learned that the Unitarian Church of Tingsboro closed and they sold their church building. With assistance from the UUA, they decided that the money would be earmarked to assist churches in Massachusetts. The stipulation for receipt of the grant money was that the money be used for the growth of these churches and that they gather together to present their proposals for the use of the grant money at the Billerica church on October 21st.
Julie Pera, Dorcas Hurd and I attended this meeting on behalf of our congregation. We were warmly greeted by members of the Billerica church and we introduced ourselves to members of the other participating churches. There was a dual purpose for this meeting. One was to disburse the grants and the second purpose was to network with the other churches receiving the grants. Additionally, we heard short presentations from the participating churches and were encouraged to share ideas with one another. It was a very inspiring day.
The Executive Committee will be discussing how our church will use this money. One of the things we have talked about is expanding our practice as a Welcoming Congregation. We learned at the gathering that the UUA has created an expanded Welcoming Congregation program and certification which we will be looking into. Please come to the next EC meeting to participate in the discussion and to bring your ideas. The next meeting is November 12 at 11:30 AM.
